The Mediterranean Diet as a Way of Life with Cathy Volpone

The lovely Cathy Volpone, owner of Big John's Pacific Food Importers in Seattle, is guest-blogging this week in honor of yesterday's Go Red For Women Luncheon in Seattle. Cathy and her father, John, were Rosanna neighbors at our last warehouse and come from a lovely Italian family. Read more to hear about how the heart-healthy Mediterranean Diet was their normal way of life growing up in Seattle. And be sure to visit their amazing store in SoDo!

When my father, Big John was growing up in Seattle during the 1930's and 40's, his family didn't realize they were on the "Mediterranean Diet" - they were just trying to survive. Typical of Italian immigrants, they raised chickens and goats, made their own wine, grew their own vegetables, and were naturally surrounded by apple orchards. They are very little meat, mostly fish and a little red meat for spaghetti sauce from the local butcher. At the end of summer, they canned what they could and hoped it would last them through the winter. They never wasted a single scrap of food. They lived lean and green by necessity.

My parents' wedding day.

By the time I came along in the 1960's, our Italian-American table had expanded. Unlike his father, who earned his living with a shovel, my father was in the food business! And although we still grew vegetables and made homemade wine, we had access to huge grocery stores and restaurants. We didn't eat out much, but when we did it was either at The New Italian Cafe or Top Spot Chinese Restaurant, both on Rainier Avenue South (and both sadly gone). Although Big John cooked on Sundays, our Croatian-American mom did most of the daily home cooking. She learned the Italian dishes as well as many American ones and everything was always made from scratch and delicious! Throughout the 1960's and 70's our Mediterranean Diet was still pretty much in tact.

The family around the table.

In the 1980's and 90's American life seemed to speed up and take out became the norm. We ran from our aerobics classes (my favorite was Belltown Ballet and Conditioning Studio) to grab dinner "to go" (I loved Pasta and Company and Rex's Deli). Luckily for the Mediterranean Diet, foods from Greece, Italy, and Spain went mainstream. It was no longer a challenge to get a Greek salad or a panini. But even with all of this access to healthy food, keeping the American heart healthy was still a challenge.

Big John today.

In this century, many of us have come full circle and have tried to go back to how my dad's family lived on Beacon Hill in the 30's and 40's. Now the garden is called "organic" and not wasting food is called being "sustainable." We have chickens, we make our own wine. No matter what you call it, it is all good news. The family table is getting a second wind. It is my hope that as we gather for meals with those we love, the Mediterranean Diet will continue to be a way to not only a healthy heart, but a satisfied soul.

In 2004 the American Heart Association faced a challenge: women were not paying attention to their heart health. Heart disease, the number one killer of women, claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year. The American Heart Association created Go Red For Women in order to raise awareness to the disease while empowering women to take charge of their heart health in a passionate, emotional, and social atmosphere.

Hundreds of thousands of women are in desperate need of your help. Please join me in this important fight to save women's lives.

Go Red Tablesetting Contest Winner

I'm so excited to announce the winner of the Go Red For Women Tabletop Contest! First, though, I'd like to thank each and every one of you who entered. Your tables were lovely, your stories heart-warming, and I was touched to see how many of you also care about heart health in women. Thank you again for sharing!

Grand Prize Winner

The Grand Prize winner is Dawn Grisham! Dawn shared her story with me:

"February is certainly the perfect month to raise awareness of good heart health. With Valentine's Day right in the middle, red hearts are everywhere!

When my children were little we always celebrated Valentine's Day with a tea party. We had a large decorated 'Valentine Mail Box.' In the week before Valentine's Day, we would all fill the box with handmade valentines, treats, and small gifts. The highlight of every tea party was delivering the mail. That and the always present large, heart-shaped chocolate cake!

Fast forward and a couple years ago, on Valentine's Day, I introduced my youngest daughter (in her 20's) to a real grown-up tea. I set the table with her great grandmother's china and served cucumber sandwiches, scones, fresh fruit, and miniature heart-shaped cakes with ganache frosting. Much to my delight, she fell in love with afternoon tea! I gifted her great grandmother's china.

Since then we've shared many wonderful teas together. Sometimes at local tea houses, sometimes in new cities when traveling. But our favorite thing to do is bake up a batch of scones, make a plate (or two) or tea sandwiches, set the coffee table with elegant china, each grab a seat, and put in one of our favorite girly movies like "Pride & Prejudice" or "The Holiday." Sunday afternoon well spent!

These pictures were taken last year at our Valentine's Day tea party. Once again, great grandma's china graces the table. I love vintage valentines and used copies for place cards. Pictured are my daughter and son-in-law."

What a wonderful story! Not only is her table lovely, but she shares the same favorite movies as me! I love that she's shared her tradition and love of afternoon tea with the next generation. Dawn will be receiving the entire French Linens collections, a set of the Vintage Glass Goblets in clear, and a signed copy of my book, Coming Home: A Seasonal Guide to Creating Family Traditions.

As I mentioned earlier, it was very hard picking only one winner, so I wanted to acknowledge the runners up! They will also be receiving a signed copy of my book.

  • Dimitra Gaitani
  • Bryan D. Harber
  • Nihal Kavici
  • Donna Richardson

Thank you all for your creativity! And a big thanks again to all those who entered!

Warmly,

Go Red Tablesetting Contest

This year I was chosen as the 2013 Seattle Go Red for Women chairwoman! I was so honored to be asked and am thrilled to be taking part in such an important cause.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. It kills more women than the next five leading causes of death combined, and most women don't even know about their risk. One in three women will be affected by heart disease this year. Can you afford to be the one? Can anyone?

The mission of Go Red is one all women can embrace - raising money for medical research, awareness, and education. Go Red provides an opportunity for all us to be inspired and to inspire others to live healthier lives.

February is Heart Month, and in honor of Go Red, I thought I'd host a little contest for Rosanna fans and other people who want to spread the word about Go Red and women's cardiovascular risks. What better time to celebrate the love and care you should show to yourself than the contest starting on Valentine's Day?

Use your creativity and passion to create a beautiful red tablesetting. Maybe you set a special table for Valentine's Day each year, or maybe you are already familiar with Go Red and have created a lovely red-themed table recently. Or maybe you just love red! Whatever the reason, enter to win a prize including the entire French Linens collection, a set of Vintage Glass goblets in clear, and a signed copy of my book Coming Home: A Seasonal Guide to Creating Family Traditions.

Go Red For Women 2013

I am so thrilled to announce that I have been named the chair of the 2013 Go Red for Women Luncheon!

The American Heart Association faced a challenge in 2004: women were not paying attention to their heart health. Heart disease, the number one killer of women, claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year. The American Heart Association created Go Red For Women in order to raise awareness of the disease while empowering women to take charge of their heart health in a passionate, emotional, and social atmosphere.

Healthful living and eating well are issues close to my heart and the focus of my chairmanship. During my time as chair I plan to establish a children's p-patch at a local charity and food bank that will educate youth on nutrition in an interactive environment. I also intend to involve the Seattle-area community in the luncheon to make it the event fun and fashionable for the women attending.
